What is a hashtag?

A hashtag (from English hash — pound sign and tag — label) is a special label denoted by the symbol #, which is used to organize and systematize content in social networks and messengers. Hashtags allow users to quickly find information on topics of interest. For example, a post tagged with the hashtag #beauty may contain materials related to fashion and style.

How to create a hashtag?

To create a hashtag, simply place the symbol # before the chosen word without a space. As a result, the text will change color to blue and become a clickable link. It is important to remember some rules for writing hashtags. Most often, a single word is used, such as #beauty or #красота. If necessary, phrases can be used without spaces, separating words with underscores or using CamelCase:

  • #morningcoffee
  • #happyLife
  • #my_friends

It is important that hashtags are simple and understandable so that users can easily remember and use them.

Using hashtags in social networks

Hashtags are widely used in various social networks, such as Twitter, Facebook, VKontakte, Instagram, YouTube, and TikTok, as well as in Telegram channels. By clicking on a hashtag, users can see all posts tagged with that label. Additionally, one can enter a word with a hash in the search bar to get relevant results.

Different platforms have different rules and features for using hashtags. For example, in Facebook and VKontakte, hashtags are not used as frequently, and their presence is more of a trend. In Facebook, it is not recommended to overload posts with hashtags, and the optimal number is 1-3 tags. In VKontakte, it is also advisable to limit to five hashtags, although up to 10 is allowed.

In Instagram posts, up to 30 hashtags can be used, but it is recommended to limit to 8 to maintain clarity and relevance.
