What are informational queries?

Informational queries are phrases that users enter into search engines to obtain specific information. This can include, for example, song lyrics, recipe details, or event information. The main purpose of such queries is to satisfy a person's curiosity, to learn something new, rather than to make a purchase or conduct a transaction.

This type of query is the most common and includes questions for which users are seeking answers. A key feature of informational queries is the use of pronoun adverbs such as "how," "what," "where," and "why." These words serve as indicators that the query is indeed informational in nature.

Situations for using informational queries

Users formulate informational queries in various situations. For example:

  • Searching for information for study or work;
  • Getting the latest news;
  • Checking transportation schedules;
  • Viewing television program listings.

Interestingly, sometimes informational queries may include words typical of transactional queries, such as "buy" or "free." However, despite this, they remain informational as the user is looking for, for example, a list of stores or websites rather than intending to make a purchase directly.

User queries can change depending on the time of year and relevance of topics. Some queries remain popular year-round, such as "how to cook chicken" or "cream for dry skin." At the same time, there are seasonal queries related to holidays or current events, such as:

  • "how to beautifully wrap a gift" — in anticipation of holidays;
  • "eruption of Eyjafjallajökull" — in the context of breaking news;
  • "Dima Bilan in Rostov" — related to recent events.

These queries are often used to analyze user interests and needs, which in turn helps in planning content and marketing strategies.

Practical applications of informational queries

Informational queries find wide application in various fields. For example:

  • For promoting blogs or content marketing projects, which helps brands strengthen their positions, confirm competence, and gain audience trust;
  • For attracting users to click on advertisements, which is especially relevant for sites earning through CPC (cost per click) or CPV (cost per view) models.

Thus, understanding and utilizing informational queries is an important aspect of successful content marketing and digital promotion, allowing companies to interact with their audience as effectively as possible.
