Introduction to JavaScript

JavaScript is a powerful programming language that provides dynamic and interactive experiences on websites. All these interactive elements are implemented using JavaScript. For example, if you type a word into the search of the Unisender Dictionary, you will see a pop-up with recommended articles — this is also the result of JavaScript in action.

Web Development Technologies

The code for any website consists of three main technologies: HTML, CSS, and JavaScript.

HTML

HTML (HyperText Markup Language) is a markup language that defines the structure and layout of content on a page, including text, images, and videos. It loads first and serves as the foundation for all other technologies.

CSS

CSS (Cascading Style Sheets) are style sheets that are responsible for the visual design of the website. They are linked to the HTML document through links to external files or embedded directly in the code.

JavaScript

JavaScript, as a programming language, adds animations and visual effects to the page. It also connects to HTML documents similarly to CSS, through links to external files or by embedding code.

Features of JavaScript

JavaScript is classified as an interpreted language, which means it requires a special program — an interpreter — to run. It reads the code line by line and executes commands immediately. Unlike compiled languages, which first convert the code into machine code, JavaScript executes slower, but its popularity continues to rise.

An important advantage of JavaScript is that it is the only language that can be executed directly in the browser. Created by Netscape Communications in 1995, it has become a standard in web development. Rapid development due to a multitude of ready-made libraries and tools makes it ideal for creating minimally viable products (MVP).

Applications of JavaScript

The JavaScript interpreter is built into all modern browsers, and its capabilities have evolved with a focus on frontend development. However, JavaScript is applied in various fields:

  • Web Applications: websites, browser-based games, online services such as CRM systems and e-learning platforms.
  • Browser Extensions: scripts such as ad blockers and translators that enhance browser functionality.
  • Backend Development: using Node.js, server-side applications can be created, as demonstrated by companies like PayPal and Netflix.
  • Mobile Applications: JavaScript is used to develop applications for various platforms, such as Android and iOS, using the React Native framework.

JavaScript is one of the most popular programming languages, supported by all browsers. If you aim to work in web development, knowing JavaScript is essential. These skills are important for frontend and full-stack developers, as well as for web designers.
