What is Pixel Perfect Layout

Pixel Perfect layout is a specialized technique that allows for the creation of HTML code that closely matches the original graphic layout. This technique requires the developed HTML template to perfectly align with the design in every visual aspect: from fonts to images and other graphic elements.

This methodology helps ensure that when the HTML template is overlaid on the PSD layout, all elements match perfectly. This approach is especially important in projects where every detail matters and strict accuracy in design display is required.

Why Pixel Perfect Layout is Needed

Imagine a designer has created a stunning website layout for you in Figma. After the work is completed, you hand it over to a developer who, however, cannot recreate it exactly as you expected. As a result, you end up with a site that visually differs from the original, even though all major elements—fonts, colors, and images—match.

In such a case, Pixel Perfect layout comes to the rescue. This method implies that the developer constantly checks the correspondence between two layers: the original design and the finished website. When overlaid, it becomes clear which elements do not match—be it image sizes or text offset. This approach guarantees that all fonts, spacing, and icon sizes will match, which in turn allows for the creation of a site that accurately reflects the designer's intent.

How to Check Pixel Perfect Layout

If you are looking for a contractor to develop a website, make sure that the technical specification includes a requirement to work according to the Pixel Perfect method. Checking the quality of this work is not difficult. You can use special browser plugins such as:

  • Pixel Perfect for Firefox;
  • Pixel Perfect for Google Chrome;
  • WellDoneCode—a cross-browser option.

The procedure for checking is usually similar for all these plugins:

  1. Save the original PSD layout in .png format via Photoshop or Figma.
  2. Open the developed HTML template in a browser.
  3. Using the plugin, overlay your layout in .png format on it.
  4. Ensure that the sizes match those used by the designer and note any discrepancies.

These steps will help you identify errors and make adjustments to the developer's work if necessary.

How Accurate Should Pixel Perfect Layout Be

The term "pixel-perfect" originated in an era when the number of screens was limited. Now, however, the number of devices on which we view websites has increased to thousands, making the task of precise layout for all resolutions practically unfeasible. The main task for the developer becomes preserving the style set by the designer across different devices.

Despite the name, small deviations in text may be acceptable. Only significant discrepancies are considered critical. The goal of Pixel Perfect is to strive for reasonable accuracy.

Transition to "Look & Feel"

Moreover, the use of Pixel Perfect can lead to an increase in code volume, negatively affecting the website's loading speed. This often occurs due to design errors when the designer specifies incorrect margins or fonts, while the client demands perfect similarity. In such cases, applying Pixel Perfect becomes impractical and can lead to unnecessary resource expenditure.

In modern web design, the "Look & Feel" approach is increasingly used, which focuses on the perception of design from the standpoint of user interface and functionality. This allows the developer to approach the work more flexibly, considering critical design elements and creating a quality product in collaboration with the designer.
