What is a refund?

A refund, which translates from English as "return of money," is a process in which an online store returns money to a customer for a purchased product or service if the customer is dissatisfied. It is important to note that, as part of the refund procedure, the customer is not obliged to return the product. This mechanism was developed to confirm the goodwill of the online seller and their willingness to meet customer needs. The decision to provide a refund remains with the store itself.

When is a refund issued?

There are several common situations when a customer can expect to receive a refund:

  • The package was not delivered within the specified time;
  • The seller sent the wrong product;
  • The product does not match the stated characteristics, such as color, size, or features;
  • A counterfeit was received instead of the original product;
  • The product turned out to be defective, damaged, or broke before the warranty period ended.

Amazon's product return initiative

In 2023, one of the largest online stores, Amazon, implemented a new labeling "Frequently returned item" for products that are returned too often. This initiative helps customers avoid purchasing items that may be of low quality or poorly shipped. This measure fosters the formation of more transparent and trusting relationships between buyers and sellers.

Refund and marketing: how does it work?

Interestingly, with the emergence of refunds, users began to show creativity in trying to take advantage of this scheme. Some buyers, after paying for a product, use various arguments to keep it and receive a refund. In rare cases, such actions may be harmless, but in worse situations, it leads to fraud. Most often, in order not to damage their reputation, stores agree to refund without additional disputes.

From a marketing perspective, refunds are an effective tool for increasing customer trust in new or unfamiliar brands. According to a study by Invesp, 58% of consumers want to see a money-back guarantee on a website, and 92% of them are willing to return to an online store that offers refunds. This creates an opportunity for customers to make more expensive purchases without worrying that the product may not fit or get damaged during delivery, as the money can be returned without issues.
