What is a category?

A category is a specific type or section of content in a blog that focuses on a particular theme. It is an essential tool for systematizing and organizing texts. Instead of creating articles and posts in a random order, authors first develop categories, and then link relevant topics to them, much like a framework structure.

For example, in a blog of an online store selling children's products, there may be various categories such as "Overview of New Arrivals," "Expert Articles from Pediatricians," and "Store News." Although categories are not always visible to users, they can be identified by tags or article headings. For instance, in the blog of SMM specialist Alexey Tkachenko, DNative, each publication is accompanied by relevant tags.

Types of categories

There are four main types of categories that help diversify blog content:

  • Entertainment: mini-games, polls, quizzes, contests, interesting facts.
  • Useful: life hacks, expert articles, opinions, instructions, collections.
  • Informational: company story, brand news, service features.
  • Commercial: event announcements, reviews, promotions, bonuses, promo codes.

The importance of categories for a blog

Categories play a key role in running a blog, as they help to:

  • Maintain a balance between different themes and genres.
  • Simplify the blogging process and create a content plan in advance.
  • Generate ideas for new publications.

Historical fact

An interesting point in history: categories sometimes became independent publications. For example, in 1756, a newspaper called "Moscow Vedomosti" began publishing in Russia, where the volume of the "Advertising" category significantly increased with each issue. In 1764, the newspaper was forced to introduce subcategories for it, such as "Sales," "Contracts," and "Departures." By 1775, the materials became so numerous that a special supplement was created for them, which was printed separately.

Analysis of category effectiveness

Categories can also be used to analyze the effectiveness of published content. The most popular topics can be determined based on the number of views, likes, or comments. If the content is structured by categories, it is often noticed that the most requested or, conversely, the least requested publications belong to a specific category. For example, expertise may turn out to be less popular compared to entertaining and educational posts. Thus, categories do not exclude situational content but make the blogging process more organized and purposeful.
