What is streaming?

Streaming, from the English word "stream," which translates to "flow," is the process of transmitting video over the internet in real time. In this process, the streamer leads a live broadcast for their audience. Streamers can use various platforms, including social networks and specialized streaming sites, to go live.

Unlike traditional video bloggers, streamers do not edit their videos in advance. They interact with their audience in real time, creating a unique experience for viewers. During the pandemic in 2020, the number of streamers increased by 33%, underscoring the growing popularity of this format.

Main genres of streaming

Streaming originally emerged in the field of video games and esports, where gamers shared gameplay and commented on it. This direction became the most popular, attracting thousands of viewers to broadcasts of major esports events and complex games like Dota 2. However, over time, streaming began to cover other areas as well.

Some popular genres of streaming include:

  • Gaming streams
  • Cooking shows
  • Sports broadcasts
  • Beauty blogs
  • Travel and vlogs
  • Lifestyle and IRL streams

There is also a category of event streams that include live broadcasts of significant events such as sports competitions, rocket launches, or inaugurations. These events gather millions of viewers from around the world.

In 2021, a study by DonationAlerts identified several main streaming platforms that are the most popular in Russia.

1. YouTube: This is the most widespread streaming platform in Russia. YouTube Live allows streamers to go live with few thematic restrictions, provided they adhere to the rules.

2. Twitch: The global leader in streaming, primarily focused on gaming content. Twitch allows any registered user to start streaming and interact with their audience.

3. Social networks: Many streamers use platforms like Instagram, Facebook, and TikTok for live broadcasts. However, some of these networks have restricted access for Russian users.

Ways for streamers to earn money

For streams to generate income, streamers must attract a large audience and go live regularly. There are various ways to monetize content:

  • Donations: These are voluntary contributions from viewers that can be made at any time during the broadcast.
  • Affiliate programs: Streamers can earn money by placing advertisements during their broadcasts, receiving a share of the profits.
  • Sponsorship: Many streamers collaborate with brands, which can also generate income.

To participate in affiliate programs, streamers must meet certain platform requirements, which may include the number of subscribers and content quality.
