What is a turquoise company?

A turquoise company is an organization where there is no strict hierarchy, and the focus is on self-management and mutual trust. In such organizations, instead of traditional key performance indicators (KPIs), employees unite around common goals and values. The concept of turquoise organizations gained popularity thanks to Frederic Laloux's book "Reinventing Organizations." The author argues that turquoise companies are the most modern and effective, as they function like a living organism, not needing constant control, unlike traditional organizations that can be compared to machines.

Three key principles of a turquoise organization

1. Evolutionary purpose

The evolutionary purpose is a global idea that the company follows. This may be the aspiration to develop technology for the benefit of humanity or to provide access to quality and useful products. It is important to note that the company's purpose stands above its profit and business tasks. This purpose is more meaningful than a mission, and competitors are viewed as allies helping to achieve common goals.

2. Self-management

A turquoise organization implements a horizontal management system, where rights and responsibilities are evenly distributed among all employees. The structure of the company resembles a network rather than a traditional vertical hierarchy. Instead of conventional management, coaching is used to coordinate employees' actions. Everyone has the right to make decisions without needing to coordinate them with management.

3. Wholeness

Wholeness implies that each employee is seen as a complete person, not just a set of resources and competencies. In such companies, people can be themselves, expressing their emotions, needs, and desires. Employees can come to the office in any clothing, bring pets, and plan their work schedules in a way that does not interfere with others' interests.

Benefits and challenges of turquoise companies

The concept of "turquoise" helps reduce the level of bureaucracy in a company and allows founders to free themselves from operational tasks. This creates an atmosphere that, at first glance, seems less stressful for employees. However, it is worth noting that this approach does not always suit people with a high level of anxiety, who prefer to control all processes.

Conclusion

At Studio 4X, we strive to become a turquoise company to reduce the level of management and delegate project responsibility to clients. However, at this moment, we have not yet found a way to completely let go of control and entrust important aspects of work to others. Understanding and implementing the principles of turquoise organizations requires time and effort, but we are confident that it will lead to a more harmonious and productive working environment.
