Today, we will talk about how to maintain engagement on social media during the most magical yet challenging time of the year — the New Year holidays.

We all know that during this time, user activity on social media can significantly decrease. People get distracted by family matters, prepare festive treats, and, of course, enjoy time with their loved ones.

So, what can you do to ensure your posts don’t get lost in the holiday hustle? Let’s figure it out together!

Why do engagement rates drop?

The answer is simple. In the lead-up to the New Year, people start actively preparing for the holidays: buying gifts, cooking treats, and planning family gatherings. This means their attention is scattered, and they are not as actively scrolling through their social media feeds. As a result, engagement rates may drop, and that’s normal.

But don’t lose hope! It’s important to adapt to the new reality.

If you notice that your posts aren’t getting as many likes as before, don’t panic. This doesn’t mean that your content has become worse. It simply reflects the current reality. People are now more occupied with spending time with family than scrolling through their feeds. Therefore, it’s essential to adapt your content to this festive mood.

Goals for this period

So, what goals can we set for this period? The first and most important goal is to increase engagement. We need our posts to not just "hang" in the feed but to truly capture attention. The second goal is engagement. We want our followers not just to see our posts but to interact with them: comment, share, and like.

Now that we’ve defined our goals, let’s move on to the tasks. We need to create content that is easy to perceive and sparks interest. This means we should think about how to make our posts more "festive."

Content Creation Strategy

We all know that during the pre-New Year period, people have a lot on their minds: gifts, celebrations, cooking. Therefore, if you want your content to stand out in the feed, you need to approach this wisely.

Talk about what matters

No one wants to dive into long texts or leave thoughtful comments. People are looking for lightness and joy, so try to make interaction with your content simple.

For example, instead of asking users to write a long comment about planning their weekend schedule or how to budget (which should have been taken care of earlier when there was more time for discussion), suggest they share a funny photo — perhaps of a cat hunting a Christmas tree! Such light tasks will not only lift spirits but also create activity in the comments.

Visual Appeal: Breaking the Mold

Now let’s talk about the visual side of your content. Yes, we all know that New Year posts are often overloaded with clichéd images of Santa Claus and gifts. But let’s be honest: this no longer surprises anyone. This year, try to create something truly unique and memorable.

Think about how you can visually stand out in the feed. Use bright, unusual images that will attract attention. Perhaps consider creating a concept that combines the New Year theme with something unexpected.

Relevance and Timeliness: Discussing What Matters Now

Don’t forget that users are currently interested in the New Year. There’s no need to bombard them with discussions about what will happen in the summer. Focus on relevant topics. The more you talk about what concerns your followers right now, the more likely they are to engage with your content.

The New Year is a Time for Experiments!

Remember that the holidays are a time for emotions. People are looking for joy, fun, and a little magic. Therefore, posts on social media should reflect these feelings. Save practical advice for weekdays — during the holidays, bring lightness and joy. Create content that brings a smile!

Let your imagination run wild!
